Early in The Lord of the Rings, the Fellowship traveled to the Elven realm of Lothlórien. There, Lady Galadriel gifted them cloaks and leaf-shaped brooches called the Leaves of Lórien. 

Besides that the leafs where a visual representation of Galadriel's blessing, they also where a symbol of the unification of the fellowship as all wore the Leaves of Lórien,

Both in The Lord of the Rings novel and in the lord of the rings movies, the leaves of lorien saved the lives of Merry and Pippin. After they were captured by Uruk-hai, the latter cunningly removed his Leaf of Lórien and dropped it on the ground for his allies to later find. While Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli tracked the Uruk-hai, Aragorn noticed the Leaf of Lórien in the mud. In a quote lifted directly from the chapter "The Riders of Rohan" from Tolkien's The Two Towers, Aragorn remarked, 
"Not idly do the Leaves of Lórien fall.

They also had magical properties as during the last stretch of the journey to Mount Doom, Frodo suffered from cold and was too physically and mentally exhausted to bear the weight of his stolen Orc armor. Instead, Sam gave Frodo his Elven cloak, attached by the Leaf of Lórien. In the chapter "The Land of Shadow" from The Return of the King, Tolkien described the Leaf of Lórien seeming to heal Frodo physically and spiritually: "Frodo took the cloak and fastened the brooch. ‘That’s better!’ he said. ‘I feel much lighter. I can go on now.'
