Ma’aseh Tuviyah - “The Work of Tobias” by Tobias Cohn (Tuvia Katz), Jesnitz - 1721

Title: ספר מעשה טוביה Author: Rabbi Tobias Cohn (Tuvia Katz) Printed: Jesnitz, 1721 (תפ”א) Printer: Israel ben Abraham Language: Hebrew Format: Hardcover (later binding), [4], 122 leaves Edition: Second edition Illustrated with diagrams, poetic verses, and cosmological engravings Description: An extraordinary and highly significant work in the history of Jewish science and medicine, Ma’aseh Tuviyah (The Work of Tobias) is a pioneering Hebrew medical and scientific compendium written by Rabbi and physician Tobias Cohn (טוביה כץ). This is the rare second edition, printed in Jesnitz (Jesienice), 1721, by Israel ben Abraham. Divided into multiple thematic parts, this encyclopedic work covers both celestial and earthly subjects: • “The Upper World” – Astronomy, celestial spheres, planetary systems • “The Microcosm” (Little World) – Anatomy, physiology, pathology, and surgical medicine • “The World of Thought” – Philosophy, theology, and religious polemics • Plus: Charts, poetic introductions, anatomical and astronomical illustrations, including cosmological diagrams such as the Ptolemaic and Copernican models. Tobias Cohn studied medicine at the University of Padua, a leading center of medical science in Europe. In this treatise, he not only presents scientific and medical knowledge but also responds to anti-Jewish polemics he encountered among non-Jews during his studies. He aims to show that the Jewish people, even in exile, have made significant contributions to science and wisdom. This edition includes a fascinating account of the false messiah Sabbatai Zevi and the interrogation of Nathan of Gaza by the rabbis of Venice — a unique historical and polemical component absent in most scientific texts. Highlights: • One of the first Hebrew printed books on medicine and anatomy • Includes astrological and astronomical illustrations alongside anatomical plates • Printed in Jesnitz (Germany), 1721, a rare center of Hebrew printing • 3 separate title pages for each part of the book • Contains early printed cosmological diagrams including a wheel-shaped chart • Engraved architectural title page with elaborate frame • Unique combination of scientific writing, religious thought, polemic defense, and Jewish identity Condition: Complete. Later hardcover binding. Internal pages with expected age-toning, marginal stains, minor worming, and several old ownership inscriptions. Diagrams and title pages intact and sharp. Some marginal paper repairs. A sound and attractive copy of a historically important Jewish scientific text. Provenance: With inscriptions and signatures from previous rabbinical owners. A cornerstone work for collectors of early Hebrew printing, Jewish science, medicine, and history. Exceptionally rare in any condition.
