Unknown - Qur'an Safaivid - 1580

A single illuminated manuscript folio page from a 16th Century Safaivid Persian Qur'an. It contains the header (Surah) andv:1-25 of the Meccan chapter 81, Al-Takwir (Putting out the sun), which describes some of the apocalyptic events leading up to the Day of Judgement, stating that everyone one will meet the consequences of their deeds. It emphasises that the Qur'an is God's revealed word and that the prophet is not insane as the pagans claim. It is written in Arabic naskh script in black ink with verses marked with simple but vibrant gold aya and the occasional diacritical marking in red advising the reader how to treat the scripture. The scripture has a solid gold surround frame with smaller black and then blue liners outside this. The chapter heading (Surah) is highly decorative 'tezhip', non-figurative style, typical of Turkey in the C16-18th. The header title is in white Thuluth script seated within a gold cartouche and with floral book endings. The folio is in very good condition for its age, with evidence of worm holing which can only be seen when held up to the light. Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing.

Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.
