Mossi mask from the Yatenga region, Burkina Faso. Incl stand.

This mask originates from the Tcheriba region in western Burkina Faso, where the Mossi people have developed a rich masking tradition influenced by neighboring Bwa and Bobo cultures. The result is a visually compelling synthesis of abstract form and symbolic design.

Carved from wood and decorated with natural pigments in black, white, and red, the mask may depict an ancestral spirit or totemic animal. It would have been worn during initiation ceremonies, funerals, or agricultural rituals, where its presence helped mediate between the human world and the spiritual realm.

In performance, such masks were animated through dance and costume, becoming active agents in maintaining social order, invoking fertility, or honoring the dead. Though traditional practices have evolved, the Mossi mask continues to stand as a powerful expression of identity, belief, and artistic ingenuity.

This example, with its refined geometry and visible signs of ritual use, offers both historical depth and aesthetic presence.

Mossi masks are typically used in initiation rites, funerals, and agricultural ceremonies to honor ancestors and maintain harmony between the living and the spiritual world. Carved from wood and often painted in bold colors or adorned with natural pigments, each mask reflects regional variations in style. In the north, such as in Ouahigouya, masks often feature vertical, plank-like shapes with geometric designs, symbolizing spirits that protect the community and ensure fertility and well-being.
