Philippe Halsman (1906-1979) - Invisible Dali

Philippe Halsman - Invisible Dali from the Halsman/Dali portfolio of ten photographs, 1953. Bears studio stamp on verso "Halsman/Dali - Copyright Philippe Halsman '81...," published in 1981, The Neikrug Press, edition 148/250. Printed under the supervision of Halsman's widow Yvonne Halsman. “Philippe Halsman's photographs of Salvador Dali - the painter, writer, theater designer, filmmaker, and theorist whose 2004 centennial was being celebrated in cities around the world. These images are the result of a creative and often outrageous collaboration between the world-renowned photographer and the artist that lasted for over thirty years. From the 1940's to the 1970's, Halsman was one of America's preeminent portrait photographers, and the photographer of choice for a wide range of celebrities and public figures. Halsman holds the record for the most covers of LIFE magazine - 101 in all - and many of his portraits have become the definitive image of some of the 20th century's most significant figures such as Louis Armstrong, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, and Marilyn Monroe.” Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York “One of the longest and most celebrated creative partnerships in art history was the one between portrait photographer Philippe Halsman and surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. Having first met in 1941, Halsman and Dalí embarked on a creative partnership that lasted for thirty-seven years and resulted in thousands of pictures, including 1948’s Dalí Atomicus.” https://www.magnumphotos.com/arts-culture/art/philippe-halsman-salvador-dali-enduring-partnership/ “Philippe Halsman and Salvador Dali lived and worked in Paris in the 1930s, when surrealism flourished. But they first met in New York in 1941, when both were new émigrés. They had arrived within months of each other – Dali in August 1940, and Halsman three months later. During the previous ten years, their paths must have criss-crossed frequently in the narrow streets of Montparnasse, where Halsman had a studio at 22 Rue Delambre, and Dali was part of the surrealist enclave at 54 Rue du Chateau. In 1936, Halsman exhibited photographs at the Galerie de la Pleiade, where surrealist photographer Man Ray also showed his work. But until 1941, Halsman and Dali had never met.“ https://www.philippehalsman.com/halsman-and-dali
