World - Verden; Ignace Gaston Pardies - (Celestical map). - 1701-1720

After Ignace Gaston Pardies, (Celestical map). Nürnberg 1719. A very rare, beautiful colored star and constellation map after the French Jesuit Ignace Gaston Pardies showing a view of the Heavens as seen from the Earth, here in the 1719 Kohler/Weigel edition. Pardies, a French Jesuit and professor of mathematics in Paris, corresponded with leading scientists of his day, including Newton, Leibniz and Huygens. His background in classical literature and science is evident in the complex artistry and mathematical precision of the celestical map. In Pardies' celestical maps we see the sky as it appears from earth which was unusual for the time. He drew the maps on the gnomonic projection which visualized the universe as a six-sided cube instead of a globe. This method allows for accurate measurement by straight lines between any point on the map. He also showed the paths of many important comets from 1577 to 1682 moving through the constellations. Dimensions: 34,5 x 35,7 cm (engraving), 36,3 x 42,8 cm (paper). Good condition. Reference: Rumsey 6900.001 - 027. Warner, Deborah Jean, The sky explored: Celestial cartography, 1500-1800, pages 196-8. Kanas, Nick, Star Maps: History, Artistry, and Cartography, page 159. Brown, Basil J. W., Astronomical Atlases, Maps and Charts. Pastoureau, Mireille, Les Atlas Francais, XVIe-XVIIe Siecles Repertoire bibliographique et etude, #365. Attention for US buyers: Due to recent postal restrictions shipping to the US can only be done by DHL, therefore higher shipping costs apply!
