【Product details】
An original Meiji 10 (1877) woodblock print triptych by Yōshū Chikanobu (1838–1912), a renowned ukiyo-e master active during the transformative years of the Meiji era. Born Hashimoto Naoyoshi, Chikanobu trained in the Kano school before studying under Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Toyohara Kunichika.
Titled Illustration of the Retreat of the Kagoshima Insurgents (Kagoshima Bōto Hikiage Zu), this dramatic composition depicts a scene from the Satsuma Rebellion (Seinan War). Rebel forces, including key historical figures such as Saigō Takamori and Kirino Toshiaki, are shown withdrawing from battle. The print vividly captures the tension and drama of this pivotal episode in Meiji history, with Chikanobu’s dynamic composition, meticulous detailing of costumes and banners, and bold use of colour.
Publisher: Signed by Yōshū Chikanobu and published by Yamamoto Rihei.
Condition: Signs of age including stains, some wormholes, numerous creases, fading, and areas where the paper has thinned. Please examine the photos for details of condition.
A compelling example of Chikanobu’s skill in historical reportage prints, this triptych offers a rare glimpse into the imagery surrounding one of Japan’s most important 19th-century conflicts.
Dimensions of A Print: approx. H 34.8 cm W 24.5 cm
