Flodhest - Fossil knogle - Hippopotamus lemerlei (Ingen mindstepris)
A remarkable set of nine fossil bones from the extinct Malagasy hippopotamus, all in very good condition. These animals closely resembled modern hippos and pygmy hippos, and palaeontological evidence suggests that at least one species survived on Madagascar until roughly 1,000 years ago.
The set includes four ribs and five phalanges, each displaying the characteristic dense structure and natural surface texture typical of Hippopotamus material from the island. The ribs range in size from the largest at 41.5 × 3.3 × 1.1 cm to the smallest at 28 × 2.6 × 0.8 cm. The phalanges measure between 8.5 × 2.8 × 2.5 cm and 6.4 × 2 × 2 cm.
An attractive and scientifically interesting group of bones, ideal for collectors of subfossil mammals and material from the unique extinct fauna of Madagascar.
