薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha) Wooden Statue Sculpture in Zushi / Gilt lacquered Miniature Shrine with Double Doors 薬師如来 Yakushi Nyorai is written “medicine master” and reads “Yakushi. Since ancient times, Yakushi Nyorai has been worshipped by many people as the Buddha who saves them from suffering from illness. Zushi "Buddhist altar", sometimes spelled Butsudan, is a small type of shrine or temple commonly found in temples and homes in Japanese Buddhist cultures. A finely crafted wooden zushi (portable Buddhist shrine) housing a standing figure of Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of Healing and Medicine. Revered in Japanese Buddhism as the compassionate protector of physical and spiritual well-being, Yakushi is often enshrined in temples and homes for recovery and protection. The Buddha stands on a lotus pedestal within a gilded interior, framed by a mandorla and flanked by symbolic guardians. The exterior cabinet is finished in dark lacquer and shows natural signs of age, consistent with its estimated production between 1910 and 1940.
