Some general informations about this theme:
1. Employment and Equality
Women in the GDR had a very high employment rate, significantly higher than in West Germany.
The state promoted the idea of the “active woman”: work, household, and childcare were meant to be compatible.
There was strong support for women in technical professions, administration, and education.
Nevertheless, traditional role expectations persisted: women were still strongly associated with household and childcare duties, even if many were employed full-time.
2. Family and Childcare
The GDR provided comprehensive daycare, kindergartens, and after-school care, allowing women to return to work early.
Motherhood was supported by the state through financial benefits and employment protection.
However, the problem of “double burden” was widely discussed: many women worked full-time and still carried out the majority of household work.
3. Political Participation
Women formally had equal rights, including in politics.
The women’s organization “Democratic Women’s League of Germany” (DFD) played a central role in mobilization and political representation.
However, political power remained predominantly male-dominated, especially at higher levels.
4. Education and Career
Girls had fundamentally the same educational opportunities as boys.
Many women pursued higher education or vocational training.
Despite high education levels, careers in top positions—in business and politics—were often limited, as old male networks dominated.
5. Leisure, Consumption, and Culture
Women actively participated in cultural life: sports clubs, music groups, theater, and other recreational activities.
Fashion and consumer goods were limited, as Western products were often only partially available.
Television, magazines, and cultural offerings simultaneously conveyed the ideals of “strong, active women” in socialist society.
6. Contradictions and Criticism
The GDR promoted equality, but many women felt the societal expectation to “do it all.”
Discrimination and underrepresentation in leadership positions persisted.
After reunification, structural disadvantages became apparent: some careers, shaped by the specific GDR system, were difficult to transfer into the new Federal Republic.
