About the Artwork
This is a high-quality hand-printed woodblock edition of Hokusai’s world-famous masterpiece “Red Fuji” (Gaifū Kaisei) from the iconic Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series.
The majestic mountain appears in brilliant red under the early morning sun, contrasted by a deep Prussian-blue sky and drifting white clouds.
This composition is considered one of the most celebrated images in Japanese art history.
What makes this edition especially valuable is the presence of the carver and printer names:
Horishi (Carver): Maeda Kanetarō
Surishi (Printer): Satō Keizō
Both were highly skilled craftsmen active in the mid-Shōwa period, known for producing museum-level ukiyo-e reprints.
Their names in the margin indicate that this print was produced using authentic Edo-period woodblock techniques—all carved and printed by hand.
The reverse of the print shows light color bleed-through (ura-zuri), typical of genuine mokuhanga.
Condition
Very good vintage condition.
There are a few small foxing spots on the margin, but they do not affect the artwork image.
Colors remain vivid, and the washi paper is well preserved.
