Jesús Rafael Soto (1923–2005) - Vibrations

kinetic sculpture, Vibrations (1969), by Jesús Rafael Soto, is a refined example of his masterful exploration of optical illusion and spatial rhythm. The piece is composed of a silkscreen (serigraph) on transparent Plexiglas, intersected by vividly painted metal rods and suspended nylon threads, mounted on two clear Plexiglas bases. The interplay of transparency, reflection, and movement creates a dynamic visual experience that shifts as the viewer changes position — a hallmark of Soto’s kinetic art. Measuring approximately 17 × 53 × 12.5 cm, this work is from a limited edition of 200 and bears the artist’s signature along with a numbered label on the underside The composition exemplifies Soto’s fascination with rhythm, perception, and vibration — central to his artistic vision. Jesús Rafael Soto, born in 1923 in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela, became one of the leading figures of the Kinetic and Op Art movements. After moving to Paris, he joined a vibrant circle of avant-garde artists. His innovative approach — blending geometric precision with the illusion of motion — positioned him alongside other pioneers of perceptual art. Through his integration of suspended metal rods, transparent panels, and dynamic optical layers, Soto invited viewers into an ever-changing dialogue between structure and perception. His works embody the essence of kinetic abstraction, sharing conceptual kinship with artists such as Lygia Clark, Jesús Soto, Cruz-Diez, and members of the GRAV collective (Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel). Today, Soto’s works are held in major collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Centre Pompidou, the Tate Modern, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Caracas. Condition: good condition overall. Slight deoxidation visible along some metal edges due to age, but otherwise excellent — the surfaces retain a vivid blue finish and high visual appeal. The Plexiglas remains clear, with minor signs of age consistent with careful preservation.
