PAUL HUNTER SPEAGLE United States | b. 1982 Paul Hunter Speagle is an American painter, muralist, and multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersection of personal narrative, spirituality, and contemporary culture. Working across painting, sculpture, and large-scale public installations, his practice is driven by an intuitive process that captures the emotional intensity of lived experience. Speagle is an internationally exhibiting artist whose work has been showcased across the United States, Asia, and Europe, including exhibitions in Hong Kong, Tokyo, South Korea, Denmark, Barcelona, Paris, and England. His global presence, combined with a strong regional identity rooted in Hickory, North Carolina, allows his work to resonate across diverse cultural contexts. Influenced by underground skate culture, street art, comics, and Southern folk traditions, Speagle’s work is defined by bold color, expressive mark-making, and symbolic imagery. His visual language blends references from Native American totems, outsider art, mythology, and biblical narratives, creating compositions that examine time, mortality, and the human condition. He received his BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In 2018, he presented his first museum solo exhibition, Walking the Dog, at the Hickory Museum of Art where his work is also included in the permanent collection. Internationally, Speagle has presented three solo exhibitions and participated in over sixteen group exhibitions and art fairs. it has been included in some of the top major collections of the world. His solo exhibitions with JPS Gallery include MYTHOLOGYANITYISM (2021), Not At The Dinner Table (2022), and The Speagle’s (2024), marking a continued expansion of his international presence. In addition to his studio practice, Speagle is an active public artist, known for large-scale murals including The Miracle of Hickory (2019) and projects associated with Art Basel Miami. He is the founder and creative director of ATAC Gallery, an artist-led platform dedicated to fostering contemporary art and community engagement. Speagle lives and works in Hickory, North Carolina
