The Puzuris is a traditional Latvian straw decoration of the winter solstice that visually and symbolically represents the world. Suspended from the ceiling, it sways with the slightest breeze. The deeper meaning of the movement of the puzuris includes the concept of the winter solstice as the time when the sun changes its course towards spring, revives, and regains its strength to rise higher. To make the puzuris float effortlessly, they are made from lightweight materials and suspended on a thin thread.
Traditionally, there are two main types of puzuris in Latvian culture. The first is a polyhedron, a geometric representation of the world made from straw or reeds. The second is a round turnip suspended on a string and pierced with rye straw, representing a hedgehog curled into a ball. Christmas is the time when the sun rises in the form of a hedgehog and begins its journey toward awakening. Such ornaments are believed to provide strong protection against evil and threats.
