United States – $1 Legal Tender Note 1917 “Sawhorse”, Fr. 37, Elliott/Burke, Red Seal, K62226354A Large-size United States $1 Legal Tender Note, Series of 1917, catalogued as Friedberg Fr. 37, with the William S. Elliott / John Burke signature combination and red Treasury seal. Serial number K62226354A is printed twice in red. This is the classic large-format United States Note commonly known as the “Sawhorse” dollar. The face features a central engraved portrait of George Washington, based on the Gilbert Stuart portrait tradition, together with the vignette “Columbus in Sight of Land” at left. The Columbus vignette was engraved by Joseph P. Ourdan. The note carries the distinctive red scalloped Treasury seal, red serial numbers, “UNITED STATES NOTE” inscription and the legal-tender declaration. The reverse is printed in green and dominated by the crossed banners reading “UNITED STATES / OF AMERICA”, whose X-shaped arrangement gave the type its “Sawhorse” nickname. The Series of 1917 continued one of the established large-size $1 Legal Tender designs and represents the final series using this particular Washington/Columbus and Sawhorse configuration. The elaborate guilloché engraving, large dimensions, contrasting red Treasury overprint and pictorial Columbus vignette distinguish the issue from later small-size American currency. Circulated example with extensive handling and age-related wear. The paper shows numerous vertical and horizontal folds, pronounced wrinkling and creasing, overall toning and surface soiling, worn margins and corners, and several small edge nicks or short splits. The upper margin shows localized wear and minor irregularity. Despite the circulation wear, the note remains substantially complete, with Washington's portrait, the Columbus vignette, Treasury seal, serial number, signatures and Sawhorse reverse design clearly identifiable.
