Unknown - Koran - Herat - Timurid - 1460

A leaf rescued from a damaged Koran originating in Herat during the Timurid dynasty. This leaf is from Chapter 6 of the Qur'an, Al-An'am (Cattle), v53-57, with emphasis on v.54: "When the believers in Our revelations come to you, say, “Peace be upon you! Your Lord has taken upon Himself to be Merciful. Whoever among you commits evil ignorantly ˹or recklessly˺ then repents afterwards and mends their ways, then Allah is truly All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” The manuscript page written on strong linen paper is in very good condition, with a single marginal roundel (Juz) in celestial blue with gold arabesque and four finials marking the 5th/10th verse. There are fourteen (14) lines of scripture in elegant black nashki script with the occasional diacritical mark in red. The spiral 'aya' are freehand and simple in their construction. on paper made from strong linen. The script is by a fine hand with beautiful spacing and clarity. This manuscript was scribed shortly after Shah Rukh’s reign at a time of great political turmoil and is a rare item dating from around the time of the fall of Constantinople to Islam in 1453. It is relatively small for ease of carriage, thus likely was for private use. As such, the leaves shows signs of devotional use but is in good condition - arguably excellent for its age. Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing. Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.
