L’opera contiene l'Apologia dell'Istoria Civile del Regno di Napoli, cioè la difesa della sua opera più famosa messa all’Indice dall'Inquisizione romana a causa dei suoi spregiudicati giudizi sui diritti dello stato opposti a quelli concessi dalla chiesa. L’opera comprende anche la Professione di Fede al P. Giuseppe Sanfelice, le Annotazioni critiche del padre Paoli sopra il nono libro del tomo secondo della Storia civile e la risposta alle suddette Annotazioni di Pietro Giannone. Bella legatura in piena pergamena di epoca. Titolo in tassello in oro al dorso. Grande vignetta allegorica incisa al frontespizio. Splendide testatine figurate. Finalini e capilettera xilografati. Giannone Pietro. Posthumous Works of Pietro Giannone. In Venice, printed by Giambatista Pasquali, 1768. Beautiful Venetian edition of the posthumous works of the famous jurist and historian, one of the greatest of our Eighteenth century. The work contains the Apology of the Civil History of the Kingdom of Naples, that is, the defense of his most famous work which was placed on the Index by the Roman Inquisition due to his unreserved judgments on the rights of the state opposed to those granted by the church. The work also includes the Profession of Faith to P. Giuseppe Sanfelice, the critical annotations of Father Paoli on the ninth book of the second volume of Civil History, and the response to the aforementioned annotations by Pietro Giannone. Beautiful binding in full parchment of the period. Title in gold leaf on the spine. Large allegorical vignette engraved on the title page. Splendid figurative headpieces. Woodcut tailpieces and initials. Dimensions 26x19, pages VII, 360. Excellent condition.
