William Gammell, educator, born in Medfield, Massachusetts, February 10, 1812. He graduated from Brown in 1831 and spent the next three years as a tutor there. In 1835, he was appointed professor of rhetoric and English literature, and in 1880, he was transferred to the chair of history and political economy. In 1859, Rochester University awarded him the degree of LL.D. Professor Gammell's service at Brown University spanned thirty years. Since his retirement from the university in 1864, he has devoted considerable attention to the affairs of various educational and charitable institutions.
