CR2, with armed condrulo. NWA 13880 Carbonaceous Chondrite - 1.3 g
It is one of the most fascinating, coveted and difficult to find carbonaceous meteorites.
The CR group of carbonaceous chondrites is characterized by large and abundant chondrules, many of which are of igneous type, few refractory inclusions, abundant metal (5-8 vol%), and a matrix of commonly hydrated fine-grained material (up to 50 vol%) along with abundant hydrocarbons and amino acids.
This makes them the oldest known material existing on Earth, although material dating back 7 billion years has recently been discovered, that is, before the formation of our own planet and even our Solar System.
Carbonaceous chondrites comprise about 4% of all meteorites.
This specimen is a slide, showing the interior of the meteorite.
They have been discovered to possess surprising and previously unknown catalytic properties.
Its minerals are capable of synthesizing, in aqueous solution and in the presence of formamide, key organic compounds in prebiotic chemistry.
Such catalytic properties point to the fundamental role in the origin of life on our planet and, why not, somewhere else in the Universe.
At Expometeoritos, we are responsible for dissemination, talks, workshops, analyses, classification, and exhibitions of Meteorites.
All our pieces are certified and additionally, we provide the chemical composition analysis if the value of the piece exceeds €300, performed at our facilities by X-Ray Spectrography.
