Charles Darwin - The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals - 1872

First edition. Illustrated with 21 text figures, and six Heliotype plates [of seven, this copy is lacking plate 6], small octavo, pp vi, 374, + four-page publisher's catalogue dated November 1872. There is a pencil signature of an early owner - William Cook - on the verso of the front endpaper. Our copy has obviously, at some time, been in a poor condition. It has been repaired, probably fifty or sixty years ago. The pages are age-toned, with a little foxing and blemishes and some signs of use. Pages 128/129 are particularly dull and toned. Pages 53 - 59 have repaired tears, no loss of text (see illustrations). The folding plate 2 has been repaired, the lower margin is frayed with slight loss (but no loss of image (see illustration). The original cloth has been re-cased, with the original spine laid down. The spine is very wrinkled. The original black end papers have been retained. The front endpaper is lightly cracked but with no weakness at all. The whole binding has a polished/glazed look to it. The front and rear covers are rubbed and slightly worn. FREEMAN 1142. The second issue, with 'htat' misprint on the first line of page 208, and the four issue points mentioned by him on the first page of the advertisements. "This is an important member of the evolutionary set, and was written, in part at least, as a confutation of the idea that the facial muscles of expression in man were a special endowment."
