Item Description:
This vibrant woodblock print by acclaimed Japanese artist Masao Ido (井堂正雄) is part of his well-known “Kyoto Hyakkei” (京都百景 – One Hundred Views of Kyoto) series, specifically from the “Rakuhoku Jikkei” (洛北十景 – Ten Views of Northern Kyoto) subseries.
The scene depicts Kifune Shrine (貴船神社), a historic and spiritual site nestled in the mountains north of Kyoto.
The composition captures the approach to the shrine through a red torii gate, with a stone staircase flanked by traditional lanterns leading visitors into a canopy of vibrant autumn foliage.
On the right side, the path winds through a quaint village street with wooden buildings and rustic charm.
The warm colors and fine details evoke the serenity and natural beauty of Kyoto in the fall, showcasing Ido’s masterful sense of atmosphere and composition.
A perfect example of modern shin-hanga style, this print is both collectible and timeless.

Artist's Comment:
Kifune Shrine
The area along the Kifune River from the Kifune entrance on the Kurama Road is known as “Kifune's Kawadoko,” attracting many visitors from across Japan seeking coolness in summer.
I went out to sketch one early autumn morning.
I was drawn to the scene at the entrance: red torii gates and stone steps flanked by rows of lanterns.
Taking the path to the right leads to the approach along the Kibune River. Ascending the steps to the left brings you to Kifune Shrine.
I began sketching while listening to the cool, soothing murmur of the stream.
