Edelgard Rehboldt, Eugen Prehm, Lothar Kannbley - Mosaik aus drei Buchstaben (VERY RARE) - 1962

VERY RARE, BRILLIANT, WIDELY UNKNOWN, HIGHLY UNDERRATED GDR/DDR PHOTOBOOK. GENIOUS COOPERATION between the GREAT PHOTOGRAPHY by Edelgard Rehboldt, the WONDERFUL LAYOUT by Helmut Merten and the BEAUTIFUL TYPOGRAPHY by Horst Scheffler. HAVE A LOOK AT THE BOOK AND YOU WILL EASILY UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN. MY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION. THIS IS THE VERY FIRST PHOTOBOOK AUCTION ON CATAWIKI - dedicated entirely to the world of the former "DDR"/"GDR" ("GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC" or "EAST GERMANY") which existed from 1949 to 1990. Still largely undiscovered and unexplored, this field offers a wealth of fascinating discoveries for collectors. 5Uhr30.com presents exceptional works by renowned and emerging artists, survey works, compelling monographs, as well as extraordinarily rare small vintage catalogues, vintage children’s books and vintage factory photobooks; signed publications, posters, and much more. A highly interesting publication by "NAW DDR" ("Nationales Aufbauwerk DDR"). For more informations about the "NAW" please scroll down to the end of the description. Very little is known about the photographer Edelgard Rehboldt (1928 - 1983). Photography apprenticeship in Halle. Freelance photographer since 1951 for "Freiheit", "Tribüne", "Mitteldeutsche Neueste Nachrichten", "Nationalzeitung", "Das neue Handwerk". Like always we guarantee detailed and accurate descriptions, 100% transport protection, 100% transport insurance, and of course, combined shipping - worldwide. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T MISS THIS UNIQUE CHANCE! Brought to you exclusively by 5Uhr30.com, Cologne, Germany. Kongress-Verlag, Berlin. 1962. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. 170 x 240 mm. 168 pages. Photos: Edelgard Rehboldt. Edited by Eugen Prehm, Lothar Kannbley. Layout of the binding (cloth) and endpapers: Helmut Merten. Typography: Horst Scheffler. Text in German. Condition: Inside with no marks; a bit foxed at the endpapers. Outside lightly foxed, no other remarkable defects. Lacks the jacket. Overall fine condition. Great, widely unknown and highly underrated East-German photobook (hard to find in any condition). The photographer Edelgard Rehboldt was also involved in other important photography books: - "die vom Ballett...(und wir)", Kongress Verlag, 1962 - "Wir in Berlin" ("We are in Berlin"), Verlag der Nation, 1965 - "Foto-Anschlag - Vier Generationen ostdeutscher Fotografen", Verlag E. A. Seemann, 2001, together with Evelyn Richter, Arno Fischer, Helga Paris, Christian Borchert, Gerhard Gäbler, Tina Bara, Harald Hauswald, Matthias Hoch, Thomas Kläber, Sven Marquardt, Maria Sewcz, Uwe Steinberg, Karin Wieckhorst and many others The National Construction Program (Nationales Aufbauwerk, NAW) was a mass initiative in the GDR (from 1951 onward), organized by the National Front, which mobilized the population for unpaid, “voluntary” labor in the reconstruction and redesign of cities (e.g., rubble clearance, construction of schools, parks, and swimming pools). Participants contributed so-called “construction hours” (Aufbaustunden), which were recorded with stamps in a construction card (Aufbaukarte), and received badges (Aufbaunadeln) and certificates. From the 1960s onward, the NAW was gradually replaced by the “Mach-mit Movement” (“Join In!” Movement) and the People’s Economic Mass Initiative (Volkswirtschaftliche Masseninitiative, VMI), as voluntarism was increasingly supplanted by planning targets and financial pressure. Reconstruction: Initially aimed at clearing war damage and rebuilding Berlin (e.g., the Stalinallee). Community projects: Construction of infrastructure such as kindergartens, sports facilities, and cultural centers. Organization: The National Front (an umbrella organization of all parties and mass organizations) coordinated the work assignments. Documentation: “Construction cards” with adhesive stamps and awards (badges in bronze, silver, and gold) for the hours completed. Shift: What began as “voluntary” labor increasingly came under pressure, with mandatory quotas (e.g., 20–30 hours per year) imposed on every citizen. Replacement: From the mid-1960s, the NAW was replaced by the Mach-mit Movement under the slogan “Making our cities and municipalities more beautiful – Join in!” and by the VMI. Legacy: Many facilities (parks, sports grounds, etc.) still bear witness today to the work carried out under the NAW.
