Authentic Orthodox Icon "The Virgin Hodegetria". On the front, the Virgin Hodegetria (“she who points the way”) gestures toward the Christ child as the path to salvation. The image derives ultimately from a venerated model that was the subject of legend: it was believed to have been painted from life by Saint Luke and brought to Constantinople from Jerusalem in the fifth century. Charming image, very impressive, touching soul and mind. Hand painted with tempera paints, gilt and patina on solid wooden base. Fully in Orthodox Byzantine style. Dated second part of 20th century. Presumably Russian origin. Well preserved. Very good vintage condition. Small traces of time and age. Approximate dimensions: 25x15 cm. Thickness: 2.4 cm. Ready to display.
