Verrière Doyen - Jarrón - HYALITE - Vidrio - Arte Deco

Hyalite Glass Vase (Art Deco, Doyen Collection) An exceptional example of 1930s Art Deco design, this vase was produced by the Belgian glassworks Doyen in Mons (formerly Havré-Ville). Made from deep black hyalite glass, the piece reflects the modernist fascination with clean lines and sculptural form. The sharply defined silhouette—with its flared shoulders and narrow cylindrical neck—embodies the elegance and precision characteristic of the Art Deco movement. Pieces in black hyalite were highly prized in the interwar period for their striking visual impact and technical complexity. To achieve the rich, opaque black hue, hyalite glass was crafted with extra thickness, ensuring complete light blockage and an intense, saturated color. This made each piece not only visually dramatic but also technically demanding to produce. A rare and sophisticated collector’s piece from the golden age of Belgian glassmaking. In the early 20th century, Jean-Baptiste Doyen and his son Gaston established a glass factory in Havré-Ville, near Mons, Belgium. Originally named Verreries Gobeleteries d’Havré-Ville, the company specialized in producing high-quality blown glassware, including tableware, lighting, and decorative pieces. Doyen’s work became particularly renowned for its Art Deco designs, featuring elegant shapes, refined engravings, and meticulous craftsmanship. A notable example is a set of mouth-blown glasses adorned with finely scoured olive shapes and intricate fan patterns, showcasing the exquisite attention to detail of the era. Among Doyen’s most celebrated creations is the “Floralies” series, which embodies the refined elegance of Art Deco design. Produced in the early 20th century, these vases are distinguished by their bold geometric forms, intricate detailing, and rich, vibrant colors. One of the most remarkable models, no. 150, crafted in the 1930s, features striking vertical stripes and a distinctive corrugated collar, often produced in warm brown glass. Many pieces from the series still bear the “Floralies” label, preserving their legacy and making them easily recognizable among collectors. Today, Doyen’s glassware remains highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors of Belgian Art Deco pieces. Their timeless elegance and historical significance continue to make them prized additions to vintage collections, standing as a testament to Belgium’s rich glassmaking tradition and artistic heritage.
