"Rudolf Schäfer has been an author photographer right from the start. In other words, he looks for his subjects and presents them in the appropriate way. He became known for his series Berlin City Landscapes, internationally famous with his »dead faces«. He has photographed nudes again and again since the early 1970s, initially for the entertainment magazine "Das Magazin". In 1977 he showed the GDR's first pure nude photo exhibition in the “Theater im Palast” in Berlin. Schäfer's nude photographs differ from those of many of his colleagues. They are more unconventional, more original, more sensual and more pleasurable. His nudes show more than naked people. They bring the respective relationship between photographer and model into and on the picture, familiar, lively, amazing. The tension between the two participants is reflected in the picture of the body and their posture, attention and aversion, direct or discreet, black and white or colored."
(from the publisher of Schäfer's book "Aktfotografie 1972-2019")
"Rudolf Schäfer, born 1952 in Herrenhof, Thuringia, is a German photographer and university professor.
From 1969, Schäfer completed an apprenticeship as a commercial artist and worked in this profession until 1972. In 1973/1974, he worked as a film camera assistant. Since 1974, he has been a freelance photographer in East Berlin. From 1978 to 1983, he pursued a distance-learning degree in photography at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig), which he completed with a diploma. During this period, he gained particular recognition for his nude photography, which he published from 1973 to 1984 in the popular magazine Das Magazin. He also worked as a fashion photographer for Exquisit.
In 1985 and 1986, Schäfer was a master student (Meisterschüler) at the Academy of Arts of the GDR under Ludwig Engelhardt and Klaus Wittkugel. Until 1990, he was a member of the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR."
