1977s Japanese Vintage Art Book
Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1889–1953) was born in Okayama, Japan, and moved to the United States at age 17, later studying at the Art Students League in New York.
He became a leading American painter, earning recognition from major institutions such as MoMA and the Whitney Museum.
During World War II, he was classified as an “enemy alien,” yet cooperated with the U.S. government by creating anti-war posters and broadcasts.
Kuniyoshi received numerous awards and represented the United States internationally, including at the Venice Biennale.
He died in New York shortly before obtaining U.S. citizenship, leaving a legacy that bridges Japanese and American art.
Kotaro Migishi (1903–1934) was a Japanese Western-style painter active from the Taishō to early Shōwa periods, born in Hokkaido.
While studying at Waseda University, he devoted himself to painting and later became a pupil of Ryūsei Kishida in 1928.
He developed a distinctive style marked by dreamy, romantic, and surrealistic elements.
Notable works include Summer Memories and Leisurely, and he is regarded as a leading figure of Japanese modernism.
Although he died at the age of 31, Migishi left a lasting impact on modern Japanese art.
