The sculpture captures a serene, classical feminine form, hand-modelled in warm terracotta clay. Sugiyama is a graduate of the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai) and its postgraduate sculpture programme. He has held numerous solo exhibitions throughout Japan and abroad, and is a two-time recipient of the Special Excellence Prize at the Rodin Prize Exhibition, with his award-winning works held by the Utsukushigahara Open-Air Museum and the Hakone Open-Air Museum. His public monuments include the large-scale work “Gate of the Muse ‘96” installed at Odaiba in Tokyo. The piece comes with an original artist biography leaflet listing his major exhibitions and public collections.
