Shinkai Kanzan (1912-2011) was a notable Japanese ceramic artist, born into a Kyoto family of potters. He is known for his highly decorative and intricately designed porcelain vases, often featuring nature motifs like gourds, birds, insects, and animals as subject matter and using complex techniques and bold colors. Shinkai studied under renowned masters and prominent ceramicists like Seifu Yohei IV and Kiyomizu Rokubei VI. He exhibited widely, being active participant in the Teiten (Imperial Art Exhibition) from 1930. Shinkai left behind distinctive pieces that blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern flair. After Second World War, he reinvented himself and exhibited extensively at national exhibitions, receiving numerous prizes. He later served as a jurist or committee member for many of the same shows. In 1989, he was awarded the Kyoto Prefecture Culture Award for Lifetime Achievement and remained active on the board of the Japan Fine Arts Exhibition, or Nitten, till 1992. His works could be seen at museums like Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, The Cleveland Museum of Art,.. With original signed and sealed tomobako.
