Hultman - Johan L. Hultman - Salero y pimentero - .830 plata - 1920, Handsmide

These are a beautiful pair of vintage Swedish sterling silver salt and pepper shakers, crafted circa 1920 in a highly ornate Rococo Revival style. The design draws heavily from 18th-century Rococo aesthetics, featuring elaborate repoussé and chased decoration with swirling scrolls, floral motifs, foliate patterns, and raised cartouches that evoke movement and luxury. Made for Norwegian Market Key Features Form and Structure: Each shaker has a baluster-shaped body on a circular pedestal base with matching embossed decoration. The domed pierced tops feature multiple holes for dispensing, and the finials are sculpted as stylized pineapple forms (a classic symbol of hospitality and abundance common in historical silverware). Decoration: The bodies are richly embellished with asymmetrical rococo elements, including C-scrolls, shell-like forms, and raised floral bosses. The lower sections have ribbed or gadrooned detailing for added texture and depth. Condition and Details: The silver shows a soft patina consistent with age, with some light surface wear and tarnish, but no major damage. One photo shows the pair weighing approximately 113.7 grams total on a digital scale, which aligns with solid sterling silver pieces of this size (around 4-5 inches tall each). Some images reveal the tops removed, confirming they are functional shakers. Hallmarks and Attribution The marks visible on the bases include "HANDSMIDE" (Swedish for "handmade" or "hand-forged"), "28" (likely an inventory or pattern number), and "J.L.H" surrounded by other stamps. J.L. Hultman was a noted Swedish silversmith active in Stockholm from around 1920 to the mid-20th century (his firm A/B J.L. Hultman operated until the 1950s, later becoming Skandia-Hultman). He is known for high-quality handcrafted silver, often in historical revival styles, and occasionally associated with firms like Svenskt Tenn for modernist pieces, though these shakers reflect his earlier traditional work. Swedish silver from this period typically carries the three crowns national mark, a purity mark (often "S" for sterling/830 or higher), and maker/city/date codes—these appear consistent with authentic 1920s Stockholm production.
