Wall decoration - Set of four carved wooden panels, France, second half 19th century. This important set comprises two square panels and two rectangular drawer fronts, all hand-carved from chestnut wood. The pieces feature rich decoration of scrolls, fleshy leaves, and vegetal motifs in the Baroque style, with pronounced relief and symmetrical composition. The square panels are arranged around a plain central rhombus, surrounded by deeply carved volutes, and may have formed part of doors or main fronts of a fine piece of furniture, such as a wardrobe, cupboard, or writing desk. The smaller rectangular panels retain their original keyholes, confirming their use as drawer fronts, possibly belonging to a chest of drawers, a bargueño (a type of writing desk), or a Baroque writing desk. The set displays a consistent antique patina, wear consistent with its age, and minor losses due to use and the passage of time, without affecting the sculptural quality of the carvings. The execution is clearly artisanal, predating mechanization.
