People in the Sun (1960) created in Hopper's later years, People in the Sun depicts a group of men and women sitting in folding chairs on a terrace, basking in bright sunlight, with a barren desert and distant mountains behind them. The composition is deceptively calm yet brims with tension each figure appears lost in thought, disengaged from one another, amplifying the theme of existential isolation despite the sunny setting.
