Descripción del vendedor

- M.C. Escher (after), authorized offset on smooth paper (approx. 170gsm - refers to paper thickness/density). 2000s

- Copyright The M.C. Escher Company - Baam, The Netherlands.

- Plate signed.

- Size: 55 x 65 cm.

- Condition: excellent. Never framed, never exposed.

- Created in 1961, Cascade stands as one of Maurits Cornelis Escher’s most intellectually captivating and visually iconic lithographs, a masterpiece in which mathematics, architecture, and imagination converge into a perfectly constructed paradox. The seemingly rational structure inspired by Renaissance aqueducts, classical arcades, and Mediterranean hill towns reveals, upon closer observation, an impossible perpetual-motion system in which water flows endlessly uphill before falling again in an eternal loop. This fusion of scientific precision and poetic illusion places Escher in a unique position between art and geometry, in dialogue with the perspectival experiments of Piero della Francesca and the spatial investigations later explored by artists and architects of the Bauhaus and De Stijl.

The work is built upon the Penrose triangle, transforming a mathematical concept into a fully inhabitable architectural environment. Every stone, shadow, and reflection is rendered with extraordinary clarity, creating a convincing reality that ultimately collapses into visual impossibility. The contrast between the calm domestic scene the house, the plants, the human figures and the intellectual complexity of the structure enhances the surreal atmosphere, making Cascade a timeless meditation on perception, logic, and the limits of human understanding. Escher’s obsessive control of light and texture recalls the graphic mastery of Albrecht Dürer while anticipating the visual culture of Op Art, Conceptual Art, and contemporary digital environments.

Today, Cascade is one of the most celebrated images in twentieth-century graphic art, its monochromatic refinement and architectural rhythm make it exceptionally suitable for contemporary interiors from minimalist and design-focused spaces to collector-driven environments where it functions as both an intellectual statement and a visually hypnotic focal point. Cascade resonates strongly within the international market that values artists who merge art and system, placing Escher in a collecting context alongside figures such as Victor Vasarely, Bridget Riley, Sol LeWitt, Josef Albers, and contemporary crossover names like Damien Hirst and Yayoi Kusama, whose practices also bridge visual seduction and conceptual rigor.
