Antique Romanian Hand-Embroidered Church Textile – Early 20th Century
Rare antique Romanian folk textile, entirely hand-embroidered, originating from a private family heritage. According to family history, this piece was made by my great-grandmother in the early 20th century.
The embroidery is executed on a different, finer natural fabric than the other piece, showing clear signs of fully manual work, including irregular stitch rhythm and hand-finished edges. The motifs depict birds and floral elements, symbolically associated with Romanian folk and ecclesiastical traditions.
This textile was originally kept and used in a local church in the former village of Topla, Romania. The village is over 100 years old and is now completely uninhabited. When the church was dismantled, the textile was passed down through the family and later given as part of a traditional dowry, preserving its historical and emotional significance.
Technique & material:
Fully hand-embroidered
Natural textile base (linen/cotton type)
Wool and cotton threads, likely hand-dyed
Dimensions:
Length: 180 cm
Width: 35 cm
Condition:
Exceptional condition for its age. The fabric remains strong, the embroidery is intact, and the colors are well preserved, with only minimal signs of age.
This is a unique historical textile, combining folk art, religious use, and family provenance, suitable for collectors of ethnographic or ecclesiastical artifacts.
