Exquisite Japanese Tea Bowl (Chawan) by Shinya Kanai – "Nitten" Special Prize Winner – Seto-style Faceted Design (Slight Wear on Rim)

This is a sophisticated Japanese Matcha tea bowl (Chawan) crafted by the acclaimed contemporary ceramic artist, Shinya Kanai (b. 1975).

The Artist: Shinya Kanai (Kanai Shinya)
Born in 1975, Shinya Kanai studied under the legendary master Reikichi Kato, a central figure in Seto-Akatsu ware. Kanai’s exceptional talent was recognized early, winning the prestigious Special Prize (Tokusen) at the Nitten Exhibition, Japan's most premier fine arts competition. In 2003, he established his own kiln, "Shakutou-an," in Noda, Chiba Prefecture. His works are celebrated for blending traditional Seto techniques with a powerful, modern sculptural sensibility.

Artistic Features:

Design (Mentori): The bowl features a "Mentori" (faceted) technique, where the sides are hand-carved into flat planes. This creates a rhythmic interplay of light and shadow.

Glaze & Color: The piece showcases a warm, sandy-yellow base reminiscent of traditional Ki-Seto (Yellow Seto). It is beautifully accented with vibrant green splashes of Tanpan (copper sulfate) and earthy reddish-brown iron underglazes.

Form & Foot: The cylindrical (Tsutsu-gata) shape is ideal for keeping the tea warm. The underside reveals a meticulously carved foot and the artist's distinct hand-incised signature "Shin (伸)" next to the base.

Condition (IMPORTANT):
Overall, the bowl is in beautiful, collectable condition. However, there is minor cosmetic wear on the rim (lip). As seen in photos #9 and #10, there are very small areas where the glaze has flaked or chipped slightly. This is minor wear and does not affect the structural integrity. Please review all photos carefully before bidding.

Dimensions:

Diameter: 10.8 cm

Height: 7.2 cm

Weight: 232 g

Accessories: Includes the original wooden box (Tomobako).

Shipping & Handling:

Courier: The item will be shipped securely via DHL, FedEx, or Japan Post with a tracking number, depending on the destination and efficiency.

Eco-friendly Packaging: In an effort to be environmentally conscious, I use recycled and reused packaging materials for shipping. Rest assured that the item will be packed with the utmost care to ensure its safe arrival.

Customs & Duties: Please note that any import duties, taxes, or charges are the buyer's responsibility and are not included in the item price or shipping cost.
