Descripción del vendedor

The origin of this mask is uncertain. Although it is labelled as Batonga-Cameroon, it bears
no resemblance to any sculptural style from Cameroon or neighbouring regions. In northern
Angola and Zambia there is a Tonga (Batonga) tribe. The cross-shaped scarification is reminiscent of that
of the Batshokwe and other ethnic groups of Angola-Congo. However, the fact that, judging by the traces of paint, the face appears to have been painted white links it to masks from Gabon and Congo (Brazzaville).
It could be Maliya (later Maria), representing a kind-hearted female ancestor who wishes to sing and dance alongside the people. Regardless of its origin, it displays meticulous craftsmanship and a simplicity of form that make it extraordinarily expressive.

Provenance: Padres Blancos missionaires, Barcelona
Argiles Collection, Barcelona
