Descripción del vendedor

Ancient Greece, pyxis in ceramic from the 3rd century BC, probably used for storing trinkets, ointments or cosmetics. The lidded vase is of spherical form with a ribbed black-glazed semi-circular body and a matching semi-circular lid surmounted with a raised knob handle. The pyxis is decorated throughout with groups of white and red painted bands.

Gnathian pottery was the work of Greek vase-painters from Apulia in South Italy. In this technique, the entire surface of the vessel is painted black, then decorative motifs were applied in added colours. Gnathian ware is named for the site where it was first discovered - the Apulian site of Egnathia. The black glaze ware is traditionally decorated with floral motifs in red, white, or yellow hues. Scholars believe that its production most likely was focussed around Taras (Tarentum), with primary workshops in Egnathia and Canosa.

Acquired from a Spanish private collection, I.A, 1950.
-The piece includes an authenticity certificate.
