The Artist: Gyokuen Bonpo (1348–1420)
Gyokuen Bonpo was a high-ranking Zen monk of the prestigious Gozan (Five Mountains) temples, notably Shokoku-ji in Kyoto. He is revered as the undisputed master of "Ran-ga" (orchid painting) in Japan. His work carries the spiritual legacy of the Chinese Yuan-dynasty literati, blending calligraphic precision with Zen philosophy.
