Item Description
This is a vintage furisode. A furisode is a formal silk kimono characterised by its long sleeves, worn by young unmarried women in Japan on auspicious occasions such as Coming-of-Age ceremonies, weddings, and graduation ceremonies. The fabric features a gradual bokashi shading from a soft coral pink ground colour to a greyish beige towards the hem and sleeve edges, with peonies, chrysanthemums, and small blossoms depicted in vibrant shades of red, purple, gold, and green. Gold leaf detailing and scattered lamé work lend depth to the floral motifs, and in a manner characteristic of furisode design, the patterns are concentrated at the hem, cuffs, and shoulders. The lining is finished in a vivid red commonly seen in traditional formal kimono.
The long, striking sleeves and elaborate pattern placement suggest this was a piece tailored for a special ceremonial occasion.
Dimensions
Length: 174.5 cm
Width including sleeves: 134 cm
Weight
1250 g / 1.25 kg
Condition
As visible in the close-up images, the plain coral pink areas of the fabric show faint age-related staining and discolouration in several places, believed to be the result of long-term storage. The floral sections and lining remain vibrant with no fading. Overall condition is good; while there are minor imperfections characteristic of vintage fabric, the piece is suitable for display or wear.
