Kneeling polychrome-finished wooden figure from Myanmar (Burma), 20th century

Characterful hand-carved and polychromed wooden figure from Myanmar (Burma), presumably from the first to middle half of the 20th century.

Displayed is a kneeling human figure with tied-back hair, slender body, and traditional clothing. Based on the pose and design it is likely a figure from a religious or devotional context, possibly depicting a monk, novice, or a serving person. It is not a Buddha representation.

Particularly striking is the old paint finish in light blue, white, red and black. It shows across the entire surface clear, irregular signs of aging and wear. Through the strong partial paint loss, the underlying wood appears at many points. This gives the figure a pronounced, authentically aged patina.

The craftsmanship is especially evident on the underside. There the original woodworking, cut and tool marks, as well as the construction from different wooden elements are visible.

Condition: In keeping with age, with clear signs of use and aging. Extensive wear and losses of the original paint finish, small cracks and damage to the wood and losses or damage in the area of the hands/fingers and the lower wooden elements. On the underside there are aging marks and constructive or older worked areas clearly visible. I am not aware of any newer restorations.
