This elegant Wajima lacquer flower vase was created by Japanese lacquer artist Shoji Ogawa.

The tall, gently curved rectangular form is finished in deep, lustrous black urushi lacquer. A vivid red bamboo design extends dynamically across the surface, enriched with delicate gold maki-e accents. The contrast between the black lacquer, vermilion bamboo leaves, and fine gold decoration gives the work a refined yet striking appearance.

The vase bears the artist’s seal on the base. It is accompanied by its original signed wooden tomobako, an artist biography sheet, and associated documentation bearing seals.

According to the accompanying biography, Ogawa is a member of the Japan Craft Association and a successor to the Kaga maki-e tradition. He studied under Rokukisai, the third-generation master of the Iinami school. His listed achievements include selections and awards at the Ishikawa Contemporary Art Exhibition, Ishikawa Branch New Works Exhibition of the Japan Craft Association, Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition, and Wajima City Art Exhibition.

Artist Profile

Shoji Ogawa is a Japanese lacquer artist based in Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture. According to the accompanying biography, he is a member of the Japan Craft Association, a successor to the Kaga maki-e tradition, and studied under Rokukisai, the third-generation master of the Iinami school.

His documented career includes five selections at the Ishikawa Contemporary Art Exhibition, five selections and two encouragement awards at the Japan Craft Association Ishikawa Branch New Works Exhibition, three selections at the Japan Traditional Craft Exhibition, and an encouragement award at the Wajima City Art Exhibition.
