Publication Background

“ONE PIECE novel ZORO” was originally serialized in ONE PIECE magazine as a special story exploring the past of Roronoa Zoro.

The story was later collected into a standalone book with additional newly written material.

The novel follows Zoro from the period after leaving Shimotsuki Village until his eventual meeting with Monkey D. Luffy.

At the centre of the story is the promise Zoro made to Kuina:

to become the world’s greatest swordsman.

The novel expands upon a period of Zoro’s life that is only briefly seen in the original manga, offering readers a deeper look at the journey that shaped him before he became the first member to join Luffy’s crew.

Story

Roronoa Zoro leaves Shimotsuki Village carrying both his swords and the promise he made to his childhood rival and closest friend, Kuina.

Determined to become the world’s greatest swordsman, he begins travelling alone.

Before becoming known as the feared “Pirate Hunter” and before meeting Luffy, Zoro experiences encounters and challenges that gradually shape the swordsman he will become.

The novel connects this early period of his life with the beginning of the ONE PIECE story.
