Object description
An authentic vintage folding surveyor’s leveling staff, also known as a stadia rod, originating from the professional world of land surveying, topography and technical drawing.
This imposing measuring instrument was designed for use by surveyors, engineers, architects and construction professionals during topographical surveys and leveling operations. Its characteristic graduated scale, with large red numerals and contrasting black markings, was designed to remain clearly visible when observed from a distance through an optical leveling instrument.
The staff is constructed from wood and metal, with several articulated sections connected by robust original hinges and mechanical fittings. The folding mechanism allowed this approximately three-metre-long instrument to be transported and stored more easily while retaining the necessary length for professional fieldwork.
The object retains a remarkable amount of its original character and patina. The painted wooden structure displays numerous signs of age, including areas of paint loss, scratches, surface cracks and abrasions, while the metal fittings show oxidation and natural ageing.
