Descripción del vendedor
Small Stone Money Disc, Yap, Micronesia
An interesting small perforated stone disc attributed to Yap in the Caroline Islands, Micronesia.
Yap is renowned for its remarkable tradition of stone money, generally known as rai. These circular stone valuables were produced in a wide range of sizes, from relatively small portable examples to the monumental discs for which Yap became famous. A characteristic feature is the opening through the centre.
The stone money of Yap formed part of a sophisticated indigenous system of value and exchange. Larger rai could represent considerable wealth and were involved in important social transactions, compensation, marriage exchanges and the establishment or confirmation of social relationships. Ownership could change without the stone itself necessarily being physically moved.
This small example is made from a light-coloured, naturally porous stone and has a deliberately worked central perforation. Small perforated stone discs are also documented from Yap, although their precise function and relationship to the better-known large rai should be described with some caution.
