János Viski (1891–1987) – Cavalcade

Oil on canvas – Signed “Viski J.” – 60 × 80 cm

A striking and atmospheric equestrian composition by János Viski, one of the Hungarian painters particularly associated with the majestic world of horses, riders and the endless Hungarian Puszta.

The painting captures a dynamic cavalcade of horsemen moving across the open Hungarian landscape, with the powerful movement of the horses contrasted against the expansive horizon. The sweeping gesture of the lasso, the animated horses and the distant herd create a remarkable sense of movement and freedom.

Viski’s fascination with the horse is immediately apparent. The work displays the characteristic combination of energetic brushwork, expressive modelling of the animals and an atmospheric treatment of the landscape, giving the scene a vivid, almost cinematic quality. Rather than presenting the horses as static decorative subjects, Viski transforms them into the central protagonists of the composition.

The work is signed “Viski J.” in the lower left, a signature form documented on numerous works attributed to János Viski. The subject, format and pictorial language are highly consistent with his well-known equestrian oeuvre.

Medium: Oil on canvas
Dimensions: 60 × 80 cm
Signature: “Viski J.”, lower left
Subject: Hungarian Puszta / Cavalcade / Horsemen
Condition: Vintage condition, with natural signs of age. Minor cracks and a small area of discoloration/wear along the lower edge. The painting retains its original aged surface and character.
Attribution: János Viski (1891–1987)

A particularly appealing work for collectors of Hungarian equestrian art and early-to-mid 20th-century European painting, presenting the unmistakable atmosphere of the Hungarian horse culture that became one of Viski’s most recognizable artistic subjects.

A powerful and evocative Viski composition, where movement, horses and the vastness of the Puszta come together in a truly memorable equestrian scene.
