- Joan Miró’s The Singing Fish is a joyful and highly characteristic expression of the artist’s poetic universe, transforming an aquatic creature into a fantastic constellation of colour, signs and spontaneous gesture. At the centre of the composition, the fish is reduced to an imaginative arrangement of black lines and geometric areas of green, blue, red and yellow, surrounded by star-like symbols, splashes, floating circles and vivid clouds of pink, turquoise and blue. Rather than describing nature literally, Miró evokes movement, sound and fantasy through an apparently instinctive language in which the fish seems to sing, dance and float within an undefined white space. The composition reflects Miró’s fascination with birds, stars, women, moons and imaginary creatures, recurring motifs through which he blurred the boundaries between abstraction and figuration. Its playful freedom and controlled spontaneity connect naturally with Surrealism and artists such as Paul Klee, Jean Arp, Alexander Calder and Max Ernst, while its energetic marks and simplified symbols anticipate aspects of later artists including Jean Dubuffet, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
