Description

This elegant Japanese flower vase, titled “Yaegasumi Ekubo” (八重がすみえくぼ 花生), is a refined ceramic work by Tachikichi (たち吉 / 橘吉), the long-established Kyoto ceramics brand whose history dates back to 1752, during the Edo period. Tachikichi is known for bringing together traditional Japanese ceramic craftsmanship and designs suited to contemporary living.

The vase is distinguished by its beautiful pale blue-green celadon-style glaze and an extensive network of decorative crackle (kannyū / 貫入) across the surface. The overlapping crackle patterns create a rich, almost crystalline appearance, giving the glaze remarkable visual depth. Because the appearance of such crackle varies naturally across the surface, the vessel has an expressive character that changes subtly according to the light and viewing angle.

The name “Yaegasumi” (八重がすみ) evokes the poetic image of layers of mist, beautifully reflected in the soft, translucent blue-green tones of the glaze. The word “Ekubo” (えくぼ) means “dimple,” referring to the gently indented areas incorporated into the rounded form of the vessel. Together, the softly swelling silhouette, subtle indentations and intricate crackle pattern create an attractive balance between traditional Japanese aesthetics and sculptural modern design.

The underside bears the maker’s mark, and the vase is accompanied by its original wooden presentation box (tomobako). The lid is inscribed in Japanese with the name of the work and bears the Tachikichi / 橘吉 inscription and red seal, making the box an important part of the complete presentation.

Although described as unused, this is a vintage item that has been stored for a long period. The vase itself remains in very clean condition. Please note that the crackle visible throughout the glaze is a deliberate decorative characteristic of the piece and should not be confused with accidental damage.

The original wooden box also remains generally clean, although it shows some minor dents and signs of age and storage. Please examine the photographs carefully for the condition of both the vase and the box.

With its serene celadon color and distinctive crackled surface, this vase works beautifully both as a Japanese ikebana flower vessel and as a decorative object in a contemporary interior.
