- M.C. Escher’s Ascending and Descending (1960) is one of his most celebrated explorations of impossible architecture, visual paradox and the limits of human perception. The composition presents a monumental building whose rooftop is occupied by two processions of identical figures endlessly climbing and descending a staircase that can never logically exist. Escher based the structure on the “impossible staircase” devised by Lionel and Roger Penrose, transforming a mathematical paradox into a strangely believable architectural world. The severe perspective, carefully rendered masonry and almost monastic figures give the image an atmosphere of discipline and order, yet the central staircase undermines that apparent rationality completely. The figures appear trapped in a perpetual ritual, turning the work into a meditation on repetition, futility and the instability of what we perceive as logical space.

Ascending and Descending has exceptional graphic strength thanks to its monochrome palette and architectural precision. It works particularly well against white, cream, warm grey, charcoal, deep green or petrol-blue walls, and a black frame emphasises its modern, mathematical character, while a restrained antique-gold frame can create an elegant contrast between classical architecture and impossible geometry. Its vertical composition makes it especially suitable for studies, offices, libraries, hallways or contemporary interiors, where the intricate details reward close viewing. It also makes an original gift for admirers of Escher, mathematics, architecture, optical illusion and conceptual art.

Escher’s unique position between art, mathematics and visual psychology gives Ascending and Descending a broad appeal far beyond traditional printmaking. Its impossible spaces connect naturally with Magritte, Dalí, de Chirico, Vasarely and Op Art, while its instantly recognisable visual language also attracts collectors interested in Warhol, Basquiat, Haring, Hockney, Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Kaws, Cartier, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Chanel, Dior, Hermès, Gucci, Lego, Star Wars and Pokémon. More than a clever optical illusion, the work remains a powerful demonstration of Escher’s ability to make an impossible world appear completely convincing, forcing the viewer to question the reliability of vision itself.
