Apollonia was founded by Greek settlers from Corinth and Corcyra near the Adriatic coast of modern Albania. It became an important centre of trade between the Greek world and the Illyrian interior. Its cow-and-calf coinage followed a tradition inherited from Corcyra, and its silver drachms circulated widely across the Balkans during the Hellenistic period and the expansion of Roman influence.
