Columna de madera de pino de origen español, de estilo antiguo, datada en los siglos XVIII/XIX.
Descripción del vendedor
This remarkable column, measuring barely sixty centimeters, embodies—within its modest scale—the overflowing exuberance of the Spanish Rococo and the inherent mastery of the 18th-century woodcarvers and joiners. Resting on a molded base finished in nuanced gilding, the piece begins with a lower section densely packed with *rocailles* (shell-like motifs), stylized foliage, and deeply carved vegetal reliefs; the contrast against the dark background heightens the dramatic *chiaroscuro* characteristic of the Baroque style. Rising from this ornamental base is a spiraling, finely fluted shaft, whose polychromy—in shades of red and gold—evokes the optical vibrancy of the *estofado* technique (a traditional Castilian method of applying paint over gold leaf). The composition culminates in a small capital adorned with acanthus leaves, crowning the piece with regal elegance.
Like so many other freestanding objects—fragments of small domestic altarpieces or sacred supports detached from their original settings as tastes shifted—this gem was rediscovered in the mid-20th century by the discerning eye of an interior decorator. By adding a lamp socket and a corresponding frame for a lampshade, the piece underwent a transformation typical of modern collecting: a lighthearted, decorative functionalism. While this stripped the object of its original liturgical purpose, it also saved it from oblivion or destruction, allowing its three-dimensional grace to endure under the warm glow of a new home.
- Carved pinewood, richly gilt and polychromed in a convincing imitation of red marble.
- In good condition.
- Private collection in Madrid.
- DIMENSIONS: 60 cm tall (Including lamp fitting)
