Ancient Roman, North African Terra Sigillata Plato decorado, 24 x 3,5 cm

A mold-made redware ceramic plate, of the type known as terra sigillata. This example stands on a wide disc foot, with steep walls and a base that gently dips to its central point. Five leaves ring the center of the plate. Terra sigillata, literally "sealed earth", refers to the method used to seal the red slip onto the pottery during the kilning process. Provenance: Ex Marius-Victor-Ernest Dumas private collection (North Africa and France), acquired in Tunisia between 1890 and 1920. M. Dumas was Controleur Civile (French colonial administrator) of the city of Sousse, Tunisia, before World War I. This collection of Roman and North African antiquities has remained in the family for the past 100 years in the French region of Haute-Savoie; Your Antiquarian, Spain, 2021; Former Pablo H.
